Observations on the Nutrient Foramina of the Human Metacarpals

Abstract

|
One hundred twenty metacarpals of Korean adults were studied for the number, position and symmetry of the diaphyseal nutrient foramina. And following results were obtained.
It was found that, in general, these bones had one nutrient foramen but the first metacarpal had double nutrient foramina or more in 11 cases. In the first and second metacarpals the nutrient foramina were present mostly on the medial surface, and in the other metacarpals mostly on the lateral surface. These foramina were mostly situated in the middle third of the bone shaft. No bilateral symmetry was noted in about 58°0 of the first and second metacarpals, while bilateral symmetry was observed in more than 80% of the fourth and fifth metacarpals.
These results showed no significant racial difference in nutrient foramina of the metacarpals between Korean adults and others.
